Ways to Improve your Child's Focus

Children are naturally curious about everything. They usually start off with a short attention span and as they grow older, their ability to focus continually develops. They want everything to be fun and enjoyable. Study shows that children’s attention span can last for a maximum of 20 minutes, after that they will shift their attention to something more interesting.  Here are some ways to help your child strengthen their concentration skills: 1.       Play focus games. In children’s early stages, they tend to move quickly from one activity to another, shifting their attention rapidly. You can try a game where your child can observe every move you both make. An example is a slow-motion game where you ask your child to walk slowly to an object, pick it up and bring it to you. Let him notice each step and action he makes. This will make him more aware of his thoughts. You can also try “Freeze!”, where everybody dances and when the music stops – freeze! This will develop your child’s attentiveness. Another game that you can try is passing the ball without saying a word. All you have to do is have strong eye contact with the person you want to pass the ball to. This helps develop your child’s focus.  2.       Understand your child’s method of learning (visual, auditory, kinesthetic). We all learn in different ways. Some learn most effectively when they see it, some when they hear it and others when they have practical knowledge of it and are able to touch it. You have to identify your child’s method of learning so you can come-up effectively with a process and way of teaching him. 3.       Have a reward system. You can also identify your child’s love language (gifts, words of affirmation, acts of service, quality time, physical touch). You can reward him in a way he will appreciate the most by considering his love language. This will allow him to strive better and concentrate even more. 4.       Allow time for distractions. Children are naturally energetic and would want to explore things. It is important to give them time to vent their energy and excitement out once they are done with their tasks. This way, they will not feel that you are trying to control them. 5.       Try deep breathing and imagery. To improve your child’s focus, you can let him do some relaxation techniques. You can ask him to close his eyes, do deep breathing and imagine that he is in a class. Ask him what he is doing, how he participates, and what distracts him. This way, you can observe his behavior in class is also different.
